• Access In The Digital World

Employment Trends & The ADA  9:30 A.M – 12:30 P.M.
Presented by L. Scott Lissner, ADA Coordinator, The Ohio State University

An overview of the employment provisions will provide a foundation for an examination of enforcement trends by the courts, federal, and state agencies.   Using scenarios drawn from the real world the presenter will explore key concepts, practical approaches, and policy models.  Participants will:
• Understand the business model for diversity & disability
• Describe best practices in the application, interview & offer stages
• Know how to respond to disability disclosure by employees
• Navigate the intersection of Family Medical Leave and the ADA
• Evaluate accommodation request and essential job functions
• Implement accommodations from providing adaptive equipment to extension of leave and reassignment.
• Manage the corrective action process when disability is an added dimension

Access in a Digital World
1:30 – 4:30 P.M.
Presented by Peter Bossley, Director of the Ohio State University’s Digital Accessibility Center and L. Scott Lissner, ADA Coordinator, The Ohio State University.

As customers, employees or students we increasingly rely on websites, mobile applications, and social media, to interact with consumers, manage our employees and business processes and teach our students.  While the Department of Justice recently  mothballed its effort to write web accessibility regulations consumer expectations (and litigation when they are not met) continues to set a standard.  A review of the regulatory environment will be followed by an overview of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0, combined with hands on advice and resources for building a customer friendly, accessible website.

The case for Digital Accessibility
Regulatory overview: OCR, DOJ, and private advocacy organizations; ADA Title II and III set a De facto standard - WCAG 2.0 level AA. The goal of WCAG is functional accessibility and usability, not mere technical accessibility. A practical look at principles, guidelines, and success criteria will provide an understanding  of functional needs across motor, speech, visual, auditory, and cognitive disabilities along with tools and resources.
